I don't know about you, but I only discovered
Charley Harper recently and cannot believe I spent this much of my life not knowing his name! His work did look vaguely familiar to me though, so I dare say I encountered his work from time to time (he illustrated some Golden Books, of which I'm sure I read many in my childhood). Anyway, I have since become completely enamoured by his stunning illustrations - his use of colour and geometry is just divine! Saying he's the greatest illustrator of the 20th century might be an impossible call, however, he's got to be right up there with the best of them!!
Born in 1922, in Cincinnati, USA, Charley Harper was best known for his modern and highly stylised wildlife and nature illustrations. He illustrated children's books and did artwork for many nature-based organisations, as well as producing prints and posters. If you'd like to read more, there's a great article about Harper over here on the
Juxtapoz blog. The
Charley Harper Studio site also have lots of info and a great range of prints to check out.
But for now, here's a few more pics to whet your appetite!
Have you heard of Charley Harper before now? What do you think?
