Friday On My Mind #7 - Bohemian Cottages, Water Castles and Gorgeous Prints....

It's Friday again! Here's a bunch of lovely things to inspire you today.....

1. You know I have a thing for tiny houses..... this gorgeous cottage bungalow has me dreaming about bohemian life in the country today! Isn't it divine? I would like to sit there all day with a good book and a bottomless pot of coffee! (There's a whole lot of other pretty stuff on this lovely blog too!)

How to transfer prints to wood.
2. This looks like a fun DIY to try out! I can imagine this would work well with old family photographs, like some of the beautiful old pictures my folks have of my grandparents when they were young couples. I'm so going to try this....

I couldn't pick a favourite so here's a little selection for you!
3. Water Castles! I found an interesting blog with all sorts of curious lists, like 12 Wonderful Water Castles!
These make me think of fairytales and princesses.... yet in a more realistic world, I can't help but imagine which little turret room I'd put my studio in if I could like there! Visiting water castles in Germany will have to go on my to-do list!

4. Blog Crush! I discovered a gorgeous new blog this week full of bright colours and inspired design... check out Kyla Is Inspired!

5. This old Japanese book cover.... just stunning!

This weekend I'll be going to the market on Saturday and on Sunday I'll be facepainting at my nephew's 5th birthday party! Should be a lot of fun! What exciting plans have you got for the weekend?

8 great photography tutorials for non-photographer bloggers

We all know that great photos are a huge part of having a good blog. I really love photography but have no particular skills and generally use my iPhone or a simple point and shoot digital camera. I use photoshop for my artwork sometimes but find it way too complicated for day to day photography. I tend to do most of my editing in other, more simple applications, such as Pic Monkey, Picasa or the great many iPhone photo apps I have (24 at last count... I'm a little addicted)!

I have found many tips and tutorials online for improving my photography and discovering different and fun ways of making great images and so I thought it might be useful to others to share! And so, here's a list of 8 simple and helpful tutorials and tips from some of my favourite bloggers to help us non-photographers on our way to better blog photos! Or photos for any use in fact! Have fun!!

Illustration Crush - Yelena Bryksenkova

I've been a fan of Yelena Bryksenkova for some time now so it's a pleasure to feature her gorgeous work on my blog today!

Yelena is Russian born, grew up in Ohio, studied illustration in Maryland and now calls Brooklyn, New York, home. She lists dashing historical men, russian ballet, silent cinema, fancy urns, elephants and mysterious circumstances among her favourite things. And with a list of inspirations like that it's no wonder I love Yelena's artwork so much!

If you want to check out more of Yelena you can visit her website, Etsy store or her very cool blog which is full of fabulous drawings, photos and interesting ideas!

Hope you're having a wonderful Wednesday wherever you are!

How to put a blog button and grab box up on your site

Today I'm going to show you a quick and easy way to put a blog button and grab box up on your site.

I saw these on so many blogs and it took me ages to work out how to do it. There are a lot of tutorials out there on the net but many of them were quite complex and assumed I knew things I didn't. So I put together an easy guide for people without any HTML skills whatsoever. I hope it's helpful!

First of all you need to design your button - I won't go into detail about that here but if you need any help with this please let me know!

Tip: Make sure you design your blog button in the right size - there's nothing worse than seeing stretched, squished or blurry buttons on a blog. It looks incredibly un-pro, so if you're not sure how to do this, ask for help.

So this tutorial is going to start with the understanding that you have your blog button ready to go. Ready? Ok. Let's do it!

Step 1 - Uploading your button to an image hosting site

a) To make a button available for others to grab and put on their site you need to host the image somewhere. I use Photobucket for this but there are many options. I've found Photobucket to be really easy so if you don't already have an image hosting account you can register for a free account with Photobucket here

b) Once you're logged in, click on the green 'Upload' button in the menu bar and then click the green bar that says Select Photos and Videos. A window will open from where you can select your button image file from your computer.

Once selected, you'll get rudely interrupted by an advertising video (I guess it's a free service afterall!) so just ignore this and scroll down to where your image sits. Here you can give it a title and a description. I always put the image size in the title so you can tell at a glance what size it is, because it's likely you'll end up with various sized buttons that all look similar. It'll look something like this.....

Now just select the image by clicking in the little box underneath it and click on the long blue button that says Save and continue to my album.

c) In your album, all you need to do now is hover your mouse over the image and a box will pop up (this sometimes take a few seconds). In the window you'll have various sharing options and four codes in boxes. You want to click in the box of the second one, Direct Link. Once clicked it will automatically copy it. It's a good idea to paste this somewhere where you can easily access it later.

Step 2 - Putting your button into Blogger

a) Now go to your Blogger dashboard and decide where you want your button to go. Most people put them in a side bar or on a separate page entitled Buttons. I use a separate page, but the process is essentially the same wherever you want to put it. I'll go over both here to make it simple.

b) If you're putting it in a page, open the Pages tab and click edit on your Buttons page (create a buttons page first if you don't have one, which you probably don't if you're doing this tutorial!).

If you're putting the button on your sidebar, open the layout tab and select new gadget in the place you want to put it. Scroll down and select Add Text. The main box is where you'll put your code. You can add a title, such as Grab A Button, if you wish!

c) In the Buttons page or the Add Text box, click on the HTML button (next to compose) so that you can enter your own HTML code.

Now you need to enter the following code, but of course, you need to change the highlighted text to your own details. The easiest thing to do is copy the code from here and paste it straight into your blog. The carefully delete the coloured bits and add your own details. Don't worry about the colours - it makes no difference in HTML, I just use them to keep it clear and simple.

<div align="center"> <a href="http://redparka.blogspot.com" target="_blank"><img alt="Red Parka Diaries" src="http://i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z325/redparka/SquareRPBlogButtondesign.jpg" /></a> </div> <div align="center"> <form><textarea rows="4" cols="14"><center><a href="http://redparka.blogspot.com" target="_blank"><img alt="Red Parka Diaries" src="http://i1184.photobucket.com/albums/z325/redparka/SquareRPBlogButtondesign.jpg" /></a></center></textarea></form> </div>

  • Change the writing in red to your blog's URL.
  • Change the writing in green to the direct link you copied from Photobucket.
  • Change the writing in blue to the text that you would like to show when someone hovers over your button.
Click back to Compose (next to the HTML button you clicked previously) to check that it worked - you should see it now exactly as it will look on your site, like the image below. You can see that I have written the size above the image so that it's clear for anyone who might want to grab the button.

If it looks right, then save it and check your site to be sure it all works and looks good!

How did you go?
Please let me know if you use this tutorial and if you have any issues so I can help fix them!

Goodluck and happy button making!

Are you living the life you imagined?

Today I'm feeling kinda down and frustrated with my life. You know that feeling - there's so much to do but you can't work out where to start. You want to create but feel ridiculously unmotivated. You can't help but think this wasn't the life you imagined, even though you know you've created it yourself. You feel the pressure of being your own boss, of not living up to your own standards, of setting your goals so high you just know you'll never reach them! Ugh. I know it always passes but it still sucks while you're in the middle of it.

Today I was going to write about motivation in my Personal Revolution series but I just feel so unmotivated! Ironic, huh? And so, I'm taking another week off the revolution (hey, it's my revolution, I'll do it as slowly and inconsistently as I want!) and instead, think about things I can do to get through this little slump I'm experiencing. I'm going to read up, take some advice, experiment with techniques and get myself motivated! Then next week, I'll write that post and tell you all about it!

Here's my plan:

1. Read some of my favourite motivation blogs and write down the tips that appeal to me.
2. Reread a couple of my favourite inspirational books
3. Turn some of the tips, ideas and quotes I find into little artworks I can print and stick on my wall - I just did one this morning (see above) from a photo I took on the east coast of Tasmania. That very process made me feel a bit better so I'm gonna do some more!
4. Do a drawing everyday, even if it's a dodgy 2 minute sketch, to remind myself that the first step to overcoming a motivational slump is just to show up each day.
5. Like last week, go back over my personal revolution posts to date and keep them up. So a walk with Benny everyday, 10 minutes of cleaning up my digital files everyday, a few minutes stretching and remembering to drink lots of water.

So that's my rough plan for the week as far as increasing my motivation levels goes! Now I just want to leave you with this beautiful photography collage I found via Pinterest. It's from a gorgeous blog called My Best Friend Jules that I found today - it's just overflowing with lovely imagery so if you're feeling a little cranky and full of angst like I am today, go over and have a wander around this beautiful site!

How's your motivational levels at the moment? What are your favourite things to do to get over a motivational slump?

Spring palettes... celebrating the turning of the season in colour!

Can you believe August is almost over?? Winter is about to end and Spring is almost upon us... I'm so excited! Here in Tasmania people tend to baton down the hatches during the winter. It's quiet out on the streets. Everyone stays warm and cosy at home. But come Spring, everyone wakes up and things start to happen! There's lots of music and festivals and outdoor dining and even though there's still the odd snow day, the sun shines most days and there's a real buzz in the air. Spring is my birthday season, the busy lead-up to Christmas season, the rainbow and sun-shower season! I love it!

Some Spring Inspiration!

I'm working on a whole lot of new designs at the moment and experimenting with some new palettes - have you ever visited Design Seeds? If not, you should! It's a fabulous resource of colour and inspiration - perfect for those days when you feel a little flat or if, like me, you've found yourself stuck in a particular colour scheme. From this awesome site I've collected these spring-like palettes to try and infuse in my work - what do you think?

I think they're all gorgeous! Which one is your favourite?

Friday On My Mind #6 - Artistic Proof That Coffee Is Good For You!!

It's Friday! This week has been crazy but productive... I've been working on some calendar designs and desperately trying to get my accounts in order to do my tax. I'm not so good at accounts... I wish I could just draw and let them take care of themselves. Wouldn't that be nice!

Here's a bunch of things I've found this week that you might like!

1. My favourite Pin of the week! Aren't these Labrador bookends gorgeous?

2. Loving this stunning new fabric by Melbourne's Yardage Design!

3. Wouldn't it be amazing to stay in this hotel? It's an igloo village in Finland!

4. While all my blogging buddies in the north speak of Summer coming to an end and the onset of Fall (or Autumn, as we Antipodeans say) we are celebrating that the days are getting longer and Spring is just around the corner! With that in mind, I LOVE these summer-inspired interiors.... that yellow makes me feel lighter just looking at it! (note to self: get more yellow in my life!)

5. Are you addicted to coffee? I like the idea that there are bloggers and artists all over the world being fueled by coffee, just like me. Are you one of them? Yes? Then you'll like this. Coffee IS good for you! I knew it all along....

Speaking of which, it's time to refill the plunger, grab my pencils and get back to my calendar designs!
Have a beautiful day!

Illustration Crush - An Open Sketchbook

An Open Sketchbook is the creative collection of work by husband and wife team Edgar and Suzanne Cabrera from North Carolina, USA. I found them on Etsy and loved the playfulness of their designs and the great use of colour. In particular, I just love their shoe drawings!

How fun are these?? I am so going to draw my shoes later today! Check out more of these little guys here!

Have a fabulous Wednesday everyone! I'm heading down to the beach now for a run with Benny before spending an afternoon drawing.... my shoes, as well as the polar bear picture I've been working on these last few days. I'm almost ready to show you!

How to embed a downloadable PDF in a non-clunky way

I have seen several design blogs offer their readers free PDF printables and have long thought I'd like to do this too, but I couldn't work out how to do it smoothly. There are lots of options, such as image hosting on Flckr or Photobucket, but I wanted something better. I also wanted it to be a PDF, not a JPEG.

You know when you see something like 'Click here to download', and you click on the link and it simply opens the image in a new tab and has the option down the bottom to print or save?  That's what I wanted! How hard could it be?

Hard, apparently! Or rather, not hard but complex for a newbie like me. I'm going to try and explain to you guys how to do this so you can do it too. It's actually simple, but there is a bit of a process to make it super smooth.

Note: This tip requires you to use Dropbox. If you don't already have this, you can go to their website and sign up for a free account. It's a very useful thing to have for many reasons, not just this. Also, I'm going to show you the easy way (using Dropbox) and the more complex but snazzier way (using Dropbox and Bitly - you can also get a handy free Bitly account on their website). So I'm going to assume you already have them or can go and get them before undertaking this tutorial. Awesome. Let's go!

Here's the PDF I want to embed. It's my Day Planner! I designed this so I'd have a list that suited me and my priorities and was colourful and fun as well! If you want to use it too, the link to download is at the end of this post - after the tutorial to embed it of course!

The Easy Way - Using Dropbox Only

Step 1 - Open the PDF you want to share and save it into your Dropbox public folder.

Step 2 - Open Dropbox in your browser, open the Public folder and right click on the PDF file. Select Copy Public Link and copy the link to your clipboard.

Step 3 - Embed this link in your blog post like you would any other link and hey presto! You have a download! Easy, huh?

The Snazzy Way - Using Dropbox and Bitly

First of all, copy steps 1 and 2 above.

Step 3 - Open Bitly and sign in. At the top right of the page there's a whacked out looking puffer fish next to a text box where you should paste the link you copied in Dropbox.

Step 4 - A box will pop up with your new shortened link at the bottom (handy for Twitter as well as looking neater). Under the box, it says Click or CTRL-C to Copy. If you take your mouse and hover over this it will change and the word Customize comes up. Click on this.

Step 5 - Now you have the option of putting something cool in here. For example, I put RedParkaDayPlanner in mine, so that anyone who ever sees this sees the Red Parka name and also what it is. (This step is entirely optional - this is the snazzy way, remember?)

Step 6 - Now copy the new snazzy link and embed in your blog post like normal. And you're done!

Why Bitly is so good

One of the best things about using Bitly is that you can log in and see how many times your link has been clicked on and saved. This gives you a really clear idea how popular the download is, important info for people like me who are trying to build a business and provide people with stuff they want and like!

So, if you'd like to download a free printable Day Planner from me, click here. How easy is that?

Hope this is useful for you!

Ghandi's Top 10 Fundamentals For Changing The World

Download this free printable here!

I've decided to have a week of consolidation in my Personal Revolution

For the last 5 weeks I've been introducing new things to work on, trying to instill some new habits and generally turning my life around for the better. It's been awesome in so many ways but when I sat down to write Week 6 I realised that I'd really let a few things slip. That I was tired and maybe I was going too fast. For example, in Week 1, I walked every day and it felt great! But last week I skipped a couple of days because I felt tired... my water drinking and stretching routines have also lapsed a little. So this week, the challenge is to consolidate on the changes I'm making, refocus on where I'm going and start Week 7 feeling a little revived and refreshed!

Have you been doing any of these challenges? If so, I'd love to know how you're going! It's hard to keep it up but don't be hard on yourself (I'm speaking to myself here - I tend to be my harshest critic!), habit change takes time and it never pays to take anything TOO seriously!

Here's a few links I've found to help keep me motivated. Also check out the awesome poster above, in both sentiment and typography! The artist has made this available for free download on her site so check it out - I'm sure looking at this on the wall everyday would help inspire me to keep working on my revolution goals!

Have a great week everyone!

Meet The Sponsors!

It's Saturday! Yay! I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend! I should be at the market peddling my goods but the weather here is pretty crazy today and I've opted for a day of working inside instead. But first, I'm pretty damn excited to introduce you to a few of my sponsors!!

I only started accepting sponsors over the last month as Red Parka was growing and I wanted to be able to offer more to my readers as well as other artists and bloggers out there like me. And it's been a fabulous experience! It's like building a little support crew around you. A warm, fuzzy, artistic support crew of independent, creative souls... it's awesome!

So please, dear readers, show my sponsors some love! They deserve it!

Hello! I'm Jacqui, and I blog at Sweet Smart Funny. My blog is where I share things that are important to me in living a simple life. I'm into things like living as sustainably as I can, growing vegetable gardens, (make that any pretty gardens), and of course food. I love food! I'm vegetarian, so I share lots of my favourite recipes and I love to make things up as I go along in the kitchen. Oh, and I'm Australian, I live in a tiny little town (which has it's good sides and it's not so good sides) and when I'm not attached to the internet I'm studying to become a Naturopath. Come over and say hi!

My name is Grace. For as long as I can remember, I've been a lover of words and even more so, their meaning. I've always loved how you can make art with a simple phrase. I'm a lover of pretty and gritty - delicious and different. Her Umbrella is just a collection of my life’s little decorations – whether it’s a love for sampling the world, empty candy wrappers, books filled with scribbled ideas or stupid people that keep showing up – they’ve all found a place underneath, adorning everyday with a little more sparkle. It's style, it's food, it's an adventure, it's life, it's grace.

Hello, my name is Sandra! A mama of two girls, Navy wife married to my best friend, thrift store addict in love with all things VINTAGE! Esty shop opening soon!

So it's time to grab yourself a cup of tea, click away above and on the right sidebar and meet some new friends! Yay for new friends!

If you're interested in sponsoring Red Parka check out our sponsor page. I offer ads from $5 and also have several ad swaps up for grabs! Because this is all new you can also use the discount code INTRO for 50% off til the end of August, meaning you can get a spot for just $2.50 a month! Revenue from sponsors goes toward growing this blog, sponsoring other blogs and keeping Red Parka running at full steam! I'd love to have you on board!

Have a fabulous weekend! Jen x

Friday On My Mind - Tigers, Cherry Pie and a Pink Lake!

It's Friday again! I'm loving these Friday On My Mind posts as it gives me a chance to share with you guys all sorts of random stuff I find and love! Hope you find a few goodies in here for yourself! Here's what's on my mind today...

1. This fabulous drawing, by Stacie Swift, to a great poem by A. D. Hope. Go to Stacie's blog to check it out properly.... isn't it gorgeous??

2. This amazing pink lake! I stumbled across Lake Retba (in Senegal) on Pinterest and am amazed I've never heard of it before. It's quite incredible, don't you think? I'd love to take a swim there one day.....

3. This recipe print. How awesome is this? I'd love to have it framed on the kitchen wall... there's a few others - blueberry muffins, chocolate brownies and pancakes! Very cool.... now I want to bake!

4. I'm loving this colour combination I found on Pinterest! Might be some inspiration for a new piece I'm working on....

5. This article on one of my favourite blogs, Man Vs Debt. I've been following Joan's get out debt plans and it's great to see her progress. And given that my personal revolution challenge this week is to get a grip on my money, this post provided a little boost of inspiration. If you're struggling with debt, or just want to learn to be savvy with money while being creative, unconventional and without being all business-like and official, I can't recommend this blog enough!

If you're a blogger, do you do something similar on a Friday? If you do please let me know in the comments so I can check it out! And if you don't (yet!) feel free to join in the Friday fun!

Here's a few link to some of my favourite Friday finds bloggers to get you in the spirit!
Kitty And Buck
Love Elycia
The Dainty Squid
Miss Indie
Veranellies (and not just because I was one of her favourite things last week - quite chuffed about that!)

Have a fabulous day everyone!
